USGS Geographical Names Information Server

The database's 2 million entries encompass the names of places that no longer exist as well as secondary names for existing places.

This is an excellent place to search for old cemeteries and churches. In the search form (1), enter the name of the feature (Good Hope Cemetery), select the type of the feature (cemetery), and select the state to be checked. Once a state is selected, you will be able to select a county within the state. You can leave the county name blank to find any cemetery named "Good Hope Cemeter" in the state. Alternatively, you can leave the feature name blank to find all cemeteries in Cherokee County, Iowa.

You will next be given a description of features in the database matching your criteria (2). The description includes the latitude and longitude as well as the name of the USGS topographic map on which the feature can be found. Select the feature that you are interested in and click on Show Feature Location to see it on a US and a local map (3).

You can zoom in on the map (4) (5) to see what roads need to be traveled to get to the cemetery.
