There are hundreds of different search engines. The following listing is just a few of the more popular search engines. The underlined numbers are links to screen captures illustrating various aspects of the site or interesting things to check out.
At Google, you can Search the web (1). If you select "I'm feeling lucky", Google will display the first web page it finds matching your search criteria rather than show you a list of web pages that match your search criteria.
You can Search for graphics.
You can Search/Read/Post newsgroups (3). Most of the newsgroups of interest to genealogists are in the soc (sociology) category (4).
Don't forget to check out the Web Directory (5) and click on Society (6) and then on Genealogy (7). Among the 5499 pages are personal pages of Google members (8) as well as links to Searchable Databases and other interesting sites.
Finally don't be afraid to check out the Advanced Search (2) buttons on the various Search sites to search better and more accurately.
One of the interesting links on the AltaVista site is the Translate (1) link to Babel Fish (2). Here you can type in a word or phrase and have it translated to or from English or several other languages.
The C/NET Search site (Search.com) (1) is a Meta-search site. That is, it will submit your search terms to several different search engines at the same time (2).
A search for a sequence of words will return a list of pages that contain any one of the words or any combination of the words. (Words like the, in, of, etc. are ignored in the search.)
William and Minor and Iowa
A search for a sequence of words separated by and will return a list of pages that contain any all of the words. The words can occur in any combination or any place in the page. The words need not occur in sequence or even together.
To more easily find the words in a long page, try clicking on edit and then find in page in the menu of your web browser.
William +Minor +Iowa
Some search engines use plus signs in front of words rather than the word and between words. There must be no space between the plus sign and the word.
"William Minor" and Iowa
Words contained between quotation marks must be together on the page and must appear exactly as listed.
"William R. Minor" and Iowa
This listing would find pages listing "William R. Minor" in Iowa but would not find pages listing "William Minor" or "W. R. Minor".
You will probably have more success searching for the following terms rather than searching for the names of your ancestors on public web sites.
