Genealogy.com

Since its launch last year, the archives have grown to 43 million names in 51 different titles. Each title costs from $29.99 to $59.99 to access. For an extra $5, you can also purchase the CD version.

Recent titles added to the collection include:

Entering data in the tree (1) on the first page actually enters data in the web version of the Family Tree Maker genealogy program. To search the various databases on the site, either click on Search in the left column or fill your ancestor's name in the boxes at the bottom of the left column.

A search for my grandfather yielded several possible entries (2) in the various Genealogy.com Data Collections. Unfortunately, you are not able to see much more information without subscribing to one or more of the data collections.

The advanced search option allows you to enter additional data to refine your search (4). However, be aware that the additional data is not always used to refine the search.

For a free one-month trial (offer in the October 2001 issue of Family Tree Magazine):

Once you sign up for the free trial, be sure to check out the Genealogy Library www.Genealogy.com/gl (1). The free trial to the Genealogy Library still does not allow you to see the various census records or the World Family Tree. However, for information in Family Books and Historical Records, you will be able to see the actual records (in many cases scanned copies of the pages).

GenForum

GenForum contains thousands of bulletin boards, or forums (1), where researchers can post queries (2) (3) and connect with Internet cousins. Some of the forums are monitored by expert family historians who generously help newcomers untangle confusing family lines.

GenForum's bulletin boards are categorized by surname, state, county, country, and research topics. For the greatest chance at successful networking, post your query on every applicable forum.

GenForum doesn't delete messages - every one of the more than 5 million postings to date are left online. You can search each forum separately at its main page, or you can search the entire system all at once from the GenForum home page.
